Jerry Herman: Gray Eminence

Jerry Herman (1931-2019) demonstrates how to bring out the pathos in one of his songs during a rehearsal, and describes moments from his career in an in-depth interview with producer Amber Edwards. Interviews also feature Herman’s contemporaries and fellow Broadway luminaries, Carol Channing, Charles Strouse, Arthur Laurents, Fred Ebb, and Charles Nelson Reilly.

The composer and lyricist of “Hello, Dolly!” “Mame” and “La Cage aux Folles,” Jerry Herman grew up in Jersey City, where he was the only child of two music-loving teachers. “Jerry Herman: Gray Eminence” premiered on NJN Public Television on November 19, 2004.
