Description

The Dryden Ensemble, based in Princeton, New Jersey, uses instruments of the 17th and 18th centuries to perform music of the same period. In March 2020, the group performed the St. John Passion of J.S. Bach as part of their 25th anniversary season. Meet some of the performers with their instruments, including the viola da gamba, the viola d’amore and the Baroque bassoon, and hear excerpts of the St. John Passion as it might have sounded when first performed in Leipzig, Germany on Good Friday in 1724.

Eric G. Schultz produced and directed the feature for State of the Arts. Joe Conlon and Kirk Sohr were the videographers, John Baker recorded the music, and Dan Gordon narrates.
